SUMMARY:Writing & Refining the Teaching Philosophy (In-Person Working Session)
DESCRIPTION:This new workshop is a deep dive into what might be the most important piece of a teaching portfolio or teaching statement: the teaching philosophy statement. This reflective and highly personal narrative encapsulates an instructor’s instructional goals\, teaching methods\, and their approach to assessing student learning. In this interactive session we explore examples from different disciplines before spending time writing\, editing\, and peer reviewing. This workshop will be held in person in New Brunswick (location will be shared prior to the event) and will not be recorded. Because of limited space\, we are capping registration at 20 participants. SUMMARY:Contemplative Practices for Inclusiveness and Equanimity (onsite)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop reviews the sciences of breathing and meditation and how they affect cognition and emotion. Drawing from the millennia-old science of yoga and meditation\, the workshop introduces two tools\, one breathing method and one meditation\, that enhance wellbeing\, inclusiveness\, and balance. The pedagogy involves a paradigm shift from cognitive learning of teaching tactics to experiential learning of a foundational shift in faculty’s inner teaching experiences and transformative relations with students. With regular and consistent practice\, these tools enable faculty to consciously respond to challenging situations while teaching and enhance their wellbeing and inclusion of others in the classroom and beyond. Participants are invited to participate in an IRB-approved workshop evaluation study that assesses the feasibility and effectiveness of these practices on the inclusion of others\, equanimity\, and wellbeing. SUMMARY:Presentation: A National Framework for Equitable and Effective Teaching in STEM
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine convened an ad hoc committee to develop a framework for “equitable and effective teaching in undergraduate STEM and identify policies and practices at the departmental\, programmatic\, and institutional levels that can facilitate implementation of the principles.” \nSTEM faculty\, department chairs\, program directors\, administrators\, and students are invited to register to attend a presentation on the report facilitated by a member of the committee and the director of the Institute for Teaching\, Innovation\, and Inclusive Pedagogy\, Dr. Tracie Addy. In the report\, the committee was charged to: \n\nPresent a framework for equitable and effective teaching that includes attention to:\n\nApproaches to and guidelines for evidence-based\, inclusive teaching;\nEquitable and effective teaching practices for different modes of teaching (e.g.\, in-person\, online\, blended and hybrid teaching)\, and different educational contexts (e.g.\, 2-year colleges\, hybrid program\, research institutions);\nThe roles that technology does\, or can in the future\, play in supporting equitable and effective teaching.\n\n\nDiscuss the experiences and training opportunities graduate students and postdoctoral students will need in order to be prepared to employ equitable and effective instruction as future faculty members.\nExamine the institutional infrastructure\, policies\, and practices needed to encourage and support evidence-based teaching\, such as opportunities for professional development\, faculty evaluation policies and practices\, and reward and advancement systems.\nProvide actionable recommendations for institutions\, disciplinary societies\, funders\, and policy makers on steps that could support implementation of the framework.\n\nThis session can count towards Competency 2 of the Classroom Inclusivity Series. \nACCESS THE REPORT
