SUMMARY:Teaching Non-Major Students: Challenges and Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning as part of the University of Equity and Inclusion’s Classroom Inclusivity Series: \nFrom Introduction to Academic Writing to General Chemistry: Nearly every academic study requires their students to take mandatory classes\, particularly at the introductory level. Throughout our own teaching careers and in our positions as educational developers\, we have seen both the potential but also challenges that might come with these classes and the heterogenous group of students attending them. Hence\, we developed a 90-minute synchronous online workshop that allows participants to brainstorm possible ways to effectively engage a diverse student-body. As a next step\, participants will start developing or redesigning assessments based on the previous brainstorming activity. \nAudience: University-wide (recommended for Instructors/Faculty\, Staff) \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Tea and Teaching: A Special “Life After Rutgers” Conversation with the Voices of Diversity Student Advisory Board
DESCRIPTION:Tea & Teaching is an informal conversation around all things teaching hosted by Jenevieve DeLosSantos\, Director of Special Pedagogic Projects in the Office of Undergraduate Education. This is a casual space\, meeting monthly for discussion and Q&A with guests. \nJoin us for a conversation with select members of our “Voices of Diversity” Student Advisory Board about their current thinking on life after Rutgers. From the ever-shifting job market to the impact of AI\, to fears of economic uncertainty\, and the changing political landscape\, students have a great deal on their minds as they make plans for their professional goals. As many of us work with graduating seniors and students seeking career advice and professional development opportunities\, join us to speak directly with some of our students about ways we might best support them in their preparation or transition into the workforce. \nThree members of our student advisory board\, Samahal Waseem (2025\, Political Science)\, Sadhana Vasantha Kumar (2028\, Computer Science)\, and Sam Carhuayano (2025\, Environmental Studies & Sociology) will lead us in a candid conversation about their anxieties and their hopes for life after Rutgers. We hope you will bring your tea and your honest questions for our student guests at this last Tea and Teaching of this academic year. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Open Educational Resources: Essential Tools of Inclusivity and Equity
DESCRIPTION:For many students\, the cost of textbooks can be prohibitive. One way textbook costs can be minimized is through the adoption of freely-available Open Educational Resources (OERs). The Rutgers Libraries Open and Affordable Textbook program (OAT) awards research funds to Rutgers faculty who make their courses more affordable for students by using open educational resources (OER)\, library content\, or other types of low-cost materials. This program will provide an overview of the growth of OERs\, and the ways in which the Rutgers Libraries’ OAT program enhances inclusivity and equity for students in the crucial area of coursework materials. This workshop will be facilitated by University Libraries as part of University Equity and Inclusion’s Classroom Inclusivity Series (Fulfills Competency 3). \nREGISTER \n

SUMMARY:Contemplative Practices for Inclusiveness and Equanimity (onsite)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop reviews the sciences of breathing and meditation and how they affect cognition and emotion. Drawing from the millennia-old science of yoga and meditation\, the workshop introduces two tools\, one breathing method and one meditation\, that enhance wellbeing\, inclusiveness\, and balance. The pedagogy involves a paradigm shift from cognitive learning of teaching tactics to experiential learning of a foundational shift in faculty’s inner teaching experiences and transformative relations with students. With regular and consistent practice\, these tools enable faculty to consciously respond to challenging situations while teaching and enhance their wellbeing and inclusion of others in the classroom and beyond. Participants are invited to participate in an IRB-approved workshop evaluation study that assesses the feasibility and effectiveness of these practices on the inclusion of others\, equanimity\, and wellbeing. Fulfills Competency 1. \nFacilitated by the School of Management and Labor Relations as part of the University of Equity and Inclusion’s Classroom Inclusivity Series. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Tea & Teaching with Elizabeth Matto
DESCRIPTION:Tea & Teaching is an informal conversation around all things teaching hosted by Jenevieve DeLosSantos\, Director of Special Pedagogic Projects in the Office of Undergraduate Education. \nJoin us for a “part-two” conversation with Elizabeth Matto\, Director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics about teaching during this challenging moment. After joining us last semester with valuable insights about teaching during the election\, Elizabeth returns to “Tea and Teaching” to share strategies for facilitating productive and respectful classroom discourse from her “Talking Across Difference” initiative. During this moment of continued uncertainty and instability\, helping to create spaces where our students can develop critical thinking skills\, encounter and respond to differing views\, and better understand their own core values is more crucial than ever. We invite you to join us\, regardless of your discipline\, to learn more from Elizabeth and share your own experiences and classroom strategies. \nREGISTER \n

SUMMARY:Generative Artificial Intelligence & Bias: What to Know & Discuss with Students (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:The outputs of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) might seem objective\, but they are reflective of the datasets on which they are trained and their respective algorithms. Therefore\, they might contain information that is inaccurate\, biased\, or misleading. During this interactive session\, we will explore what is known about bias and GenAI and potential conversations that we can have with our students to support their literacy. \nThis session can count toward Competency 1 of the Classroom Inclusivity Series. \nThis session can also count toward Competency 3 of the Teaching & Generative AI Pathways. \nREGISTER \nNote: The Zimmerli Art Museum is located on the College Avenue Campus. SUMMARY:Interpreting SIRS and other forms of Student Feedback (Virtual Interactive Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:While students are crucial stakeholders in the university’s teaching enterprise\, their feedback should not be mistaken for “evaluation of teaching\,” which is a task for instructional colleagues. Student feedback is an indicator which provides evidence that must be interpreted. In this workshop\, we explore scholarly research on the limitations and potential biases of student feedback. We present strategies for how department chairs and program directors should review\, interpret\, and utilize the likert-scale and comment responses from the Student Instructional Ratings Survey (SIRS) to improve course curriculum\, support faculty\, and evaluate teaching. This workshop is especially beneficial for those who regularly engage with SIRS\, but we also encourage anyone from the university community interested in learning about best practices in interpreting student feedback to join us. To attend the workshop or to receive the video recording after the workshop\, please register. \nFacilitated by the Office of Teaching Evaluation and Assessment Research. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Writing & Refining the Teaching Philosophy (Virtual Working Session)
DESCRIPTION:This new workshop is a deep dive into what might be the most important piece of a teaching portfolio or teaching statement: the teaching philosophy statement. This reflective and highly personal narrative encapsulates an instructor’s instructional goals\, teaching methods\, and their approach to assessing student learning. In this interactive session we explore examples from different disciplines before spending time writing\, editing\, and peer reviewing. This workshop will not be recorded.
