Overview & Purpose

This three-session certificate program provides instructors and staff members with practical knowledge and skills for working with instructors on the design or redesign of courses. Participants must attend and participate in all three sessions in order to earn the certificate, as well as submit the end-of-program reflection.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the sessions, participants should be able to:

  • Identify and apply basic frameworks for effective course design
  • Implement a consultation model for course design mentorship

Session Information

Session 1- Principles of Effective Course (Re)Design: Part I

Designing an effective course takes time, intentionality, and planning. We will start the program with the fundamental principles of what makes an effective course that promotes student learning. During this session participants will explore evidence-based frameworks and principles such as backward design of instruction, Universal Design for Learning, accessibility, assessment design, and more.

Session 2 – Principles of Effective Course (Re)Design: Part II

This session will continue the exploration of principles introduced in Part I and include a focus on application within participants’ course design mentorship contexts.

Session 3 – Mentoring Instructors in Course (Re)Design

Mentoring instructors in their course design efforts is most effective when it is instructor-centered and collaborative. This session will introduce participants to the Brinko Model of consultation, a foundational framework used in instructional consultations. Participants will practice applying this model to their own mentorship contexts. We’ll also discuss how to navigate a variety of challenges that mentored instructors can face in course design and practical solutions.

Final Reflection

To synthesize learning from the certificate program, participants will submit a 500 to 1000-word reflection that responds to the following prompts:

  • Describe your mentorship context. Share information about the course redesign(s) or design(s) that you will be supporting.
  • Based on what you’ve learned and your experiences in the certificate program, how are you considering applying effective course design and consultation principles to your mentorship context?
