Teaching and Generative AI Pathways
Eligibility: To participate in these pathways you must be an instructor at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
Self-Enroll in the Site & Submit Requirements to Complete Milestones at Your Own Pace
Overview
Given the increased accessibility and rapid evolution of generative artificial intelligence, the development of literacy in the technologies is important for all instructors and students at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. As such technologies become even more pervasive, creating course and assignment guidelines and assessments that consider the influence of such tools will continue to be critical.
We are offering all instructors at Rutgers University-New Brunswick the opportunity to further their learning journeys in teaching with generative artificial intelligence and participate in new pathway programs that have several milestones described below.
Please note that this initiative is for instructors who are integrating GenAI tools into their teaching as well as those who are employing teaching approaches that are not focused on AI detection but other creative ways to keep learning at the focus. Full-time tenure track and non-tenure track teaching faculty, lecturers, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars are welcome to participate in this pathway.
Instructors can complete the Traditional Pathway or the Design Justice Labs Pathway. The Traditional Pathway involves initiatives facilitated by TIIP, community partners, and external groups. Design Justice Labs Pathway initiatives are facilitated by Critical AI and focus on critical AI literacies from a critical AI studies and design justice approach.
What are benefits to participating in these pathways?
We have heard a lot of interest from instructors wanting to learn more about GenAI. These pathways are systematic approaches to facilitate the achievement of these goals and to support instruction. Instructors are encouraged to document, share, and celebrate their engagement in, and achievement of, the milestones of these pathways. We will also feature instructors and their milestones.
What are the four milestones?
- Foundational Knowledge – Learning about the tools and their limitations and opportunities in learning environments
- Implementation – Designing or redesigning an assignment in the face of GenAI
- Assessment of Impact – Understanding how an assignment revision influences student learning
- Ongoing Learning – Continued engagement in professional development on teaching and GenAI
How do instructors complete the milestones?
Acknowledging various communities of expertise and opportunities, instructors can achieve each milestone by engaging in professional development both within Rutgers or outside as long as it aligns with the competencies below. They will self-enroll in the Canvas site and submit their reflections. Any engagements from May 2024 onward can count towards these pathways.
Initiatives facilitated by colleagues within the Rutgers University-New Brunswick community will be noted below on the website and updated as new initiatives are launched. Instructors should reach out to TeachingInstitute@rutgers.edu if they engaging in other professional development or initiatives to participate in these pathways.
What are the competencies for each milestone?
Foundational Knowledge
- Competency 1: Understand how GenAI technologies (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) work and their possibilities and limitations in teaching and learning environments.
- Competency 2: Develop guidelines that address student usage of GenAI in ways that foster the achievement of learning outcomes.
- Competency 3: Foster students’ GenAI literacy, including their knowledge of ethical and responsible usage, tool capabilities, limitations, and applications within the discipline.
Implementation
- Competency 4: Develop and implement a major course assignment that addresses student usage of GenAI in ways that foster the achievement of learning outcomes.
Assessment of Learning
- Competency 5: Measure the impact of a major course assignment design or redesign in the face of GenAI on student achievement of learning outcomes.
Ongoing Learning
- Complete the other milestones plus additional initiatives that address two of competencies 1-5.
